About Catamount

Catamount is a free daily trivia game where every answer is a number. You guess, you get scored on how close you were, and a pixel-art mountain lion cub named Pico climbs a mountain at night as you go.

What it is

Each day brings one climb of seven questions. Everyone who plays on a given day sees the same questions, so you can compare notes with friends afterward without spoiling anything. The questions ask for prices, years, distances, heights, counts, speeds, lengths of time and sizes. The game has no accounts, no sign-up and no paywall: you open the page and play.

We built Catamount because we like the moment after a good guess. You thought a skyscraper was 800 feet and it was 1,400, or you were sure a price was in the thousands and it was $499. That small surprise is the fun of trivia, and numbers are a purer form of it than names or dates alone, because you can be wrong by a little or a lot, and the game can tell you which.

Why numbers, and why closeness

Most trivia is pass or fail. Catamount is about distance. A guess that is 10 percent off earns almost full credit, and a guess that is off by a factor of ten earns nothing. That makes the game forgiving to people who are good at reasoning and not only to those who have memorized things, and it makes every question worth thinking about, even when you have no idea. Our guide to estimating explains the habits behind that.

Where the questions come from

The question bank holds more than five thousand questions across eight categories, each with a single numeric answer and a short note on where the figure comes from. We use rounded, commonly cited figures, and where a number has changed over time, the question names the year or the context it refers to. A question is retired or corrected when we learn that it is wrong. If you think we got something wrong, please tell us, with a source if you have one. We review every correction.

You can browse samples from the bank in our fact files. We keep facts for upcoming climbs off those pages so they cannot spoil the game.

Who makes it

Catamount is created by Alvier Studios. The daily climbs began on October 1, 2026. The game runs as a single lightweight web page, hosted on Cloudflare, with the music and sound effects generated in your browser, so it loads quickly and works on a phone or a computer.

How it pays for itself

Catamount is free to play and supported by advertising from Google AdSense. We keep ads off the gameplay itself and let you choose between personalized and non-personalized ads. The privacy policy explains what data is involved, which is very little.
