Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the things people ask most. If yours is not here, get in touch.

Is Catamount free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no subscription and no paywall. The game is supported by advertising.

When does the daily climb change?

At midnight in your own time zone. Everyone gets the same seven questions on the same calendar date, so the new climb opens at a different moment for people in different parts of the world.

What happens if I miss a day?

The last six days stay on the home screen, so you can still play them. Late climbs count toward your stats, but your day streak is based on climbs played on their own day.

My streak or scores disappeared. Why?

Catamount stores your progress in your browser, on your device, and nowhere else. Clearing your site data, using a private window, or switching to a different browser or device starts you from scratch. We have no accounts and so no way to restore it.

Why did I get 100 for a guess that was not exactly right?

For big numbers, tiny misses are not worth punishing. The tolerance grows with the size of the answer, from none for numbers under about 200 to 5 percent for answers in the billions. See how scoring works.

Why is the slider so odd?

It is logarithmic: each step multiplies your guess instead of adding to it, so one slider can handle $5 and $5 billion. Type your answer if you prefer. You can use k, M, B and T for thousand, million, billion and trillion.

What does the hint do?

You get one per climb. It reveals a range the answer is inside, and it costs 20 points on that question. Save it for a question you cannot bracket yourself.

Do I have to answer in 20 seconds?

Yes. When time runs out, whatever you have entered is locked in. If you entered nothing, that question scores zero. Quick answers earn a small bonus worth up to 8 percent of the question's score.

What is Pico?

Pico is the mountain lion cub who climbs the mountain as you score. The game's name is another word for a mountain lion, and the summit is 14,000 feet, which is what climbers call a fourteener.

I think an answer is wrong.

Thank you for telling us. Email hello@catamount.io with the question's wording and a source if you have one. Many figures change over time or differ by source, and the notes on each question say which one we used.

Does Catamount collect my data?

Very little. There are no accounts, and we record anonymous counts such as which questions get answered and how far games get, so we can improve the game. Ads, if shown, come from Google AdSense and may use cookies. The privacy policy has the details.

Can I turn off the music?

Yes. There are Music and SFX buttons at the top of the game. Your choice is remembered in your browser.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Catamount is a web page that works in current mobile and desktop browsers. On iPhone and Android you can also add it to your home screen from your browser's share or menu button.
